Michelle Wie: A Name Stunning1 the Golf World

Fourteen-year-old Michelle Wie is already a major celebrity2 in the golf world, a prodigy4 who seems 1)destined5 to become the Tiger Woods of the Ladies' tour, the best woman player ever. But Michelle Wie wants to compete against men, and she's already proved she can do it.

Interviewer: What's your 2)ultimate goal?

Wie: Well, I think my ultimate goal is probably "The Masters." Uhm, I think it'd be pretty neat walking down The Masters' 3)fairways.

Interviewer: Like to win it?

Wie: Yeah, I'd love to. It's a...

Interviewer: You seem to really want to 4)push the envelope.

Wie: What does that mean?

Interviewer: What does that mean?

Wie: Yeah.

Interviewer: That means go as far and as fast as you can.

Wie: Yeah. I mean, I like fast, and I like, I like, uhm, challenges. And I think that the faster you get there, then...there's somebody at, always...I also, I have to be the first to do everything, and I just want to be the best, so...

Interviewer: 5)And when did you start to beat your parents?

Wie: Oh, I think I started beating them when I was seven or eight, but they say I started beating them when I was nine, but I refuse to believe that.

Interviewer: So, who's pushed you more in your game, your mom or your dad?

Wie: Uhm, I don't know. I guess my mom, but I wouldn't really call it pushing because they didn't really push me. I'm much more self-6)motivated.

Michelle's game is now in the hands of one of the best instructors6 in the business, David Leadbetter, who has coached the likes of 7)Ernie Els and 8)Nick Price.

David: I mean, if she was a pianist, you'd see a pianist practicing eight hours a day, and somebody who loves what they do—and she really loves the game, she's got a real passion for it.

Interviewer: Do you think she could conceivably play and make, make a living on the Men's Tour?

David: If she continues at the present rate, I’d say yes. You'd have to say that, potentially, she could do it and I 9)wouldn't put it past her. I mean she's a very, very competitive7 girl.

Interviewer: You could turn pro3 tomorrow and be rich and famous. Do you worry that people's expectations, that now it's expected of you that now you’re going to go out and win 10)tournaments on the Men's Tour, and that you're going to be the best woman golfer ever, and qualify8 for "The Masters" and...Do those expectations bother you?

Wie: No, they don't really bother me because they're expectations of what I want to do, so I just have to...I just take one expectation at a time, just take it day by day, and then, I don't know, hopefully, it'll all work out, and I don’t really feel it as a bother because that's what I want to do.
