SouthAfrica is a country that always creates an impression. We know of its diversepopulation, the troubled history of apartheid, and its rebirth as a globaltravel destination. I've been a fan of this country for many years. Butthis is my chance to go beyond the obvious South Africa, to explore on foot andtake time to see how life and stunning1 landscape work today in the new SouthAfrica, a country that's now came to invite the world.
Helloand welcome to the foothills of the Drakensberg. This towering mountain rangesis regarded as one of the most
distinctive2 in the world and it's home to SouthAfrica highest peaks. Our country explored this valley right at the center ofthe Drakensberg, because it encapsulated so much of the human history thatshaped this massive.
Theseformidable peaks form a scarment over thousand kilometers long. It dominatesthe province of Kwazulu
Natal3, home of the Zulu nation. And beyond it, there isa whole new country, the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. Watching over the rangein the distance, the most recognizable of the summits, Cathedral peak.
Thesoaring high point dominates the valley. But down here in the peak's shadow,there is a
misty4 history to get the crisp with. Over a hundred years ago inKwazulu Natal, British and bull famously slugged it ....
