The tradition of builing stone monuments in prehistoric3 Europe dates back about 7,000 years. In the centuries that followed, megalith appeared across the Continent, following the spread of neolithic4 culture. One of the most impressive displays of ancient standing stones can be seen near the French town of Carnac, where 10,000 menhirs, most of which predates Stonehenge by many centuries, stretch over 6 kilometres.

-The average weight of stones here is between 2 and 4 tons. Bigger blocks, like this one, can reach 20 tons.
