Three women have been nominated as the finalists for the annual World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the Child.
Nominations1 are accepted by the Swedish-based organization, after which a committee of children selects the finalists. Millions of children around the world then choose the winner.
Betty Makoni of Zimbabwe, who was an abused child, has fought for the rights of women and girls and against assault, forced marriage, trafficking and sexual abuse.
Another nominee2 is Cynthia Maung of Burma, who for the past 20 years has campaigned for the health and education of thousands of refugees both in Burma and in refugee camps in Thailand.
The third nominee is Inderjit Khurana of India. For more than 20 years, she has operated over 100 schools in slums and on railroad platforms, helping3 poor and vulnerable children.
Magnus Bergmar is executive director of the World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the Child in Mariefred, Sweden. He says that as many as six million children may vote this year to choose a winner. The prize of $140,000 will be awarded April 16th in Mariefred.
