Lesson54 A Necklace1
Helen and Mary are both studying English at University2. Helen is very good at throwing the javelin3 and Mary is very good at running4.
One evening they went to practice5 their sports in the university grounds6, and when they had7 finished8, they walked part9 of the way home together, but at one corner they had to say goodbye because their homes were in different directions10.
"Be careful on your way home," Mary said11 to Helen. "I would12 be happier if your houses were nearer."
"Me too," answered Helen.
The next morning Helen and Mary met at an English class, and Helen said to Mary, "Do you know what happened to me after I left you yesterday evening?"
"No, " answered Mary anxiously13. "What happened to you?"
"Well," Helen said, "a thief14 came15 up behind me and robbed16 me of my necklace."
"I wish I"d been there," Mary said angrily. "I"d have run after the man and I"d probably17 have caught him. But what are you going18 to do now? Have you been to the police19?"
"No," Helen answered with a smile.
"Why not?" Mary asked in surprise.
"Because," Helen answered, "when the man pulled20 my necklace, I turned round suddenly21 and put my hand out to try to stop him.
I caught his necklace and pulled it off22 him. My necklace was23 a cheap one which was not real24 silver25; but his is made26 of real gold! If I went to the police, I might27 have to give it to him."
