Hawakes, as an able-bodied actor, has a filmography of scary and offbeat¹ characters. He was Oscar nominated two years ago for his role as a crystal-meth addict² in Winter's Bone. But playing O'Brien required not just the physical transformation³ but the challenge of playing a real person.
