One of the most common refrains about the explosive growth of social mediais that it makes many of us "narcissistic1." Too many people stare too intentlyat their highly curated images and plunge2 through our screens into a bottomlesssea of inauthenticity.
For millions of people, a social media bubble inflates4 every day, as theirkey indicators—likes! endorsements5! Klout scores! clickthroughs! -soar.
Unfortunately, these misguided measures exert great and growing influenceon how we manage our lives and businesses while reflecting our social mediamisuse. If we don’t pop our virtual personal bubbles, we can be in for a worldof very real hurt.
To be sure, we need the healthy form of narcissism6 more than ever. We needto thoughtfully participate in the interconnected world—and social mediaplatforms and tools, used correctly, are an incredibly effective way to do so.But these tools only work if we use them as intended. This requires somenarcissism, the self-regard necessary to express our authentic3 selves – but notthe obsession7 with image that caused Narcissus’ untimely end.
