Julie: Hi everyone, I’m Julie Moran. The count-down to the 73rd annual Academy Awards has started. So join us as we meet the stars, talk with Oscar 1)nominees2, and catch the glamour3 with People Magazine Style Editor, Steven Koochiekaro. If you look at this crowd, it is a movie-lover’s Hollywood dream come true. And tonight’s all about the excitement of the big screen, and who better represents the best of Hollywood than Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas?
Julie: Welcome, welcome to the pre-show. You both appeared in Traffic, but never in the same scene. Do you plan to work together any time soon?
Catherine Zeta-Jones: Yes, we’re looking for something to do right now. We have a script that we’re preparing. And someday I’ll get to do some scenes with my husband.
Julie: Good. You’re working with Julia Roberts. Did you guys talk dresses on the set this week?
Catherine Zeta-Jones: Actually, we did wrap this week, but she always looks gorgeous. And I’m just so thrilled for her. I hope this is going to be her night.
Julie: Michael, you have presented nine times, Catherine twice, did you give her any tips tonight?
Michael Douglas: She doesn’t need any tips, she’s an old pro4 at this. She’s lucky, she gets over in the beginning of the evening, so she gets to enjoy the show for the rest of the time.
Catherine Zeta-Jones: I’m first up.
Julie: That’s great.
Chris: He grew up as a 2)hockey fan in the state of 3)Oakland, tonight he goes for an 4)unprecedented 5)hat-trick: three Best Actor Oscars. He’s one of the most talented actors you could possibly imagine, and he’s up this year in Cast Away. And let’s go to Julie, ‘cause she’s with Tom Hanks right now.
Julie: Look, I am in the middle of... Here they are! I tell ya... look at this. We barely got you up on this 6)platform. I mean they were dragging you down the red carpet.
Tom Hanks: Everything was under control. We left the house early, we thought we were like 7)stepping on the gas...
Julie: And you’re late. Let me ask you this: when you were working on Bosom5 Buddies6, dressing7 as a woman, did you ever think you’d walk down this carpet, five times as a nominee1?
Tom Hanks: You know, I don’t know how to answer that question... No, I thought I’d be asking people if they wanted lids with that. That’ what I thought. You know.
Julie: 8)Rita, we always 9)evaluate how beautiful you look, let’s evaluate Tom. How did he do tonight?
Tom Hanks: Julie, this bow tie is going to be 10)driving me nuts all night, it’s always going off to the side.
Tom Hanks: Thank you.
Julie: Enjoy the night. Thank you very much, good luck!
Chris: She is the only woman to have a number one movie and a number one record at the very same time. And if I could be counsel around in this town I would choose you, Jennifer Lopez, you are once again the goddess of the red carpet.
Jennifer Lopez: Oh. Thank you.
Chris: How did you choose this fabulous dress tonight?
Jennifer Lopez: I... you know, always choose at the last minute, which is bad.
Chris: That’s good, it makes you more 11)improvisational9.
Jennifer Lopez: You know, and what I feel good at the time. It goes that for me.
Chris: It looks just amazing. Are you looking forward to seeing a lot of your friends in there? It’s a great chance to socialize tonight, isn’t it?
Jennifer Lopez: Yeah, I mean, there’s so many people, it’s like, every time you hear the crowd start screaming, you’re like, who’s there? Who’s there? You know. Oh there’s Angelina Jolie, Kate Hudson! It’s fun, you know?
Chris: Enjoy the 12)mingling. Great seeing ya. Let’s go back stage with Jim Moret.
Jim:Chris, there's one person in the word who could 13)get away with saying,"Jennifer Lopez looks good enough to eat”. That would be 14)Dr. Hannibal Lecture and his 15)alter ego10, Anthony Hopkins. That movie terrified a lot of people, me included.
Anthony Hopkins: Uh-huh, good. Did you get sick?
Jim: I was not sick, but I was a little 16)queasy. You know some ten years after you 17)originated that role and won an Oscar for it, audiences are embracing this character again.
Anthony Hopkins: I don’t know why, but I’m glad they are.
Jim: Is it difficult when you approach a 18)sequel to try to keep things fresh and new?
Anthony Hopkins: Nah! Nothing is difficult.
Jim: You are somewhat of a 19)chameleon, I’ve seen you play Picasso, I’ve seen you play Nixon. You always seem to immerse yourself in these characters. How do you do that?
Anthony Hopkins: Well, that’s what they pay me to do, so I do it.
Jim: You’re very humble11. You also said that you don’t go to a lot of movies though.
Anthony Hopkins: Not really, I see some good ones like Traffic, and Gladiator, and a few others.
Jim: Are you having a lot of fun here tonight? And I wish you...
Anthony Hopkins: Yeah, I enjoy these. These are fun. And I’m just looking forward to sitting down, watching the show. I don’t have to be nominated or anything, or presenting an award to anyone.
Julie: Julia hi! Can you believe it -- the night is finally here?
Julia Roberts: I know, I know.
Julie: Your dress looks nice as well!
Julia Roberts: Thank you.
Julie: What did you guys do this morning?
Julia Roberts: We had breakfast with our family and 20)a bunch of friends.
Julie: And just kind of laid back?
Julia Roberts: Oh no. We were silly... acrobatics12, and eight tons of bacon, and...
Julie: 21)Benjamin, I know what you love about this lady, it’s her 22)spontaneity. Has she prepared a speech tonight? Or is she going to fly 23)solo?
Benjamin Bratt: She never does, why would she start tonight? Which I find kind of amazing, giving the things that come out of her mouth sometimes. She’s quite herself.
Julie: I can’t believe, you look gorgeous! But you usually don’t use a stylist, is this vintage? Or is it some creation that you found?
Julia Roberts: Ah no, this is vintage Valentino.
Julie: Well, I wish you a lot of luck, and thank you so much for joining us.
Julia Roberts: Thanks for having us!
Julie: You’re welcome.
Jim: Sting is here to perform his Oscar nominated song from The Emperor’s New Groove13. Now you came here with two of your six children, I know your family is very important to you, did you make this film in part because of your kids?
Sting: Yeah, I think you often do things to be cool in the eyes of your children. And I think I’m winning that battle.
Jim: Now Phil Collins and Elton John have both crossed over from pop to the Academy Awards for animated14 films, are you feeling lucky tonight?
Sting: No, I’m actually not feeling terribly lucky tonight. I don’t think I’m going to win. But I’m here to sing the song, and I want people to know. “You know, we should’ve voted for that sing, ‘cause he can sing.”
Jim: What makes the difference between a great movie song and a great song?
Sting: I don’t think there’s any difference, I think a great song is a great song. You know, the 24)context is all the same.
Jim: Best of luck to you tonight, Sting.
Sting: Thank you.
Jim: Thank you.
Sting: Have a good one.
Julie: How does it feel to be in the highest grossing, foreign language film of all time?
Michelle Yeoh: I feel(s) wonderful.
Chow Yun Fat: So do I.
Michelle Yeoh: Yeah.
Julie: When you were making this, did you know that you were making something very special?
Michelle Yeoh: We knew we were doing something very special. I think all of us really looked forward to working with Ang Lee, and then also taking a 25)genre15 that we know so well to the rest of the world. But I think all the elements came together with the Best Actor, the Best Producing Team, you know the music, the director of photography, and then a wonderful director like Ang Lee.
Julie: Tell me this, how hard was it to learn how to fly?
Chow Yun Fat: She always get used to it, but for me it was the first time hanging in the air, 100 feet away,it was like riding a 26)roller coaster.
Julie: So a lot of physical training went into this role?
Chow Yun Fat: Uh, yes, yes ma’am.
Julie: Good luck tonight. Thank you so much for joining us.
Chow Yun Fat: Thank you.
Julie: And checking the clock, we are about sixteen minutes away before the curtain goes up, on the 73rd Academy Awards. And as always the red carpet is a 27)showcase of 28)sumptuous16 style, and now here’s Steven Koochiekaro to give us our first 29)exclusive 30)recap of the brilliant creations that are turning heads here on the red carpet. Steven, what do you think?
Steven: Turning heads indeed, the stars have out-done themselves yet again.
Julie: They have.
Steven: Let’s take a look. Goldie Hawn, still 31)vamping after all these years in that body hugging Vera Wang.
Julie: Unbelievable.
Steven: That’s an advertisement for sit-ups, if you ask me. Winona Ryder, 32)funky and yet formal at the same time. I like the shredding17 at the bottom of her dress. Looking absolutely beautiful. Joan Allen, polished in Michael Course, the dress actually has real coral beads18 on it, there’s a fact!
Julie: Wow!
Steven: Catherine Zeta-Jones, pure Oscar perfection. I’m having a fashion heart attack. Movie star, smoldering19. Sting, I like that he did kinda Cary Grant, old Hollywood classic, and absolutely, and
beautiful. Joaquin Phoenix20, kinda did a new twist on it. He’s in Armani, but I like the long tie. He’s young, he can pull it off. Angelina Jolie, very simple in a Golchen Gavanna 33)tux, but really beautiful. Where are the 34)tattoos?
Julie: I don’t know.
Steven: I wanna see ‘em! Ashley Judd, with Shane Armani, went for a kind of “35)flapper” feel, she looks like she could dance all night. Does she need a partner? Hillary Swank, phenomenal! Shimmering21 in Versace, very Marilyn Monroe, and “36)Happy birthday, Mr. President!”
Julie: Look at her!
Steven: Halle Barry, 37)luscious22 and soft, in Babs Minish but not that soft, look at all that skin! She looks like she’s been 38)exfoliating for the last six months.Hot! Russel Crowe, going for something a little different in Armani. I actually heard he was going to wear the little leather skirt from Gladiator, but he nicked his leg shaving this morning.
Julie: Oh, too bad!
Steven: Ouch bloody23! And Samuel L. Jackson, Mr. Cool himself, in Armani. He wanted to be Shaft24 goes to the Oscars. He got it!
Julie: He got it. What would you say is the fashion trend tonight for the ladies?
Steven: Skin, nature’s fabric25.
Julie: And for the men?
Steven: For the men, a traditional mixes with some envelope pushers.
Julie: Great! Thank you so much, Steven!
Steve Martin (MC): Thank you very much. Thank you very much. You know, when they asked me, back inJanuary, if I would host the Oscars, the first thought that came into my mind was, would there be enough time for my face lift to heal. And right now, all over the world, there are eight hundred million people watching us right now. And everyone of them is thinking the exact same thought - that we’re all gay. But that is what is great about show business, it’s a tolerant business. It’s the most tolerant in the world. You have black people, white people, Asians, 39)Hispanics, Jews, Christians26, all working together. All because of a single common love: 40)publicity27. People say to me, “Steve, you’re a Hollywood actor, you must be so separated from the world. How do you keep in touch with ordinary life?” Well, it is possible, and it can be done. Like the other day I was having dinner at my house with 41)Mel, 42)Julia, 43)Tom and 44)Gwyneth. Now, earlier Mel had called and wanted to bring a friend, you know, some guy who helps children. And I said, “Mel, let’s just keep it names above the title.” And he understood and he was fine with that. And then Tom said, “You know, you just can’t get 45)decent sunglasses anymore.” And Julia said, “Well there’s a great sunglasses shop in Beverly Hills.” So I said to Tom, “You know, the next time you have your driver 46)drop your kids off at school, why don’t you have him pick you up a pair of sunglasses?” And Tom said, “Well, I drop my kids off at school.” And I said, “What?” And then Tom said to Gwyneth that he loved Shakespeare In Love, and then Gwyneth said to Tom that she loved Cast Away, and then Julia said to Mel that she loved What Women Want, and Mel said to Julia that he loved Erin Brockovitch, and then it was late and they all went home. And I thought, this is what I’ve always dreamed about: dinner at home with friends where we discuss the arts. So I’m pleased to introduce our first presenter28, one of the stars of Traffic, Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Catherine Zeta-Jones: Good evening. Centuries before man knew how to count the years, he knew how to draw pictures. Cavemen illustrated29 their walls with their dreams. Today’s dreams are projected on the walls of 47)multiplexes, illustrated by
the movies’ art directors, whom we now honor. For Best Achievement in Art Direction, the nominees are: Tim Yip, whose designs provided the perfect setting for blending fantasy and legend in Crouching30 Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Michael Corenblith for the art direction, and Merideth Boswell for the set decoration of that Yule-tide Tale of Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Arthur Max for the art direction, and Crispian Sallis for the set decoration that depicted31 the glory of the Roman Empire in Gladiator. Martin Childs for the art direction and Jill Quertier for the set decoration of the pained and 48)turbulent life of the Marquis De Sade in Quills32. And from a different page in French history is the art direction of Jean Rabasse and the set decoration of Francoise Benoit Fresco33 that captured the 49)culinary perfection of Vatel. And the Oscar goes to Tim Yip for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Russel Crowe: Good’ay folks, how ya doing? On this list of nominees are the people that have thrilled me, astounded34 me, and protected me. I have a great deal of respect for the men and women that do this job. And it’s my privilege to read the nominations35 in the category of editing. For Almost Famous, Joe Hutshing and Saar Klein; for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Tim Squyres; for Gladiator, Pietro Scalia; for Traffic, Stephen Mirrione; for Wonder Boys, Dede Allen. And the Oscar goes to Stephen Mirrione for Traffic.
Chow Yun Fat: Create a cheering crowd in an ancient Roman 50)arena36, make a man turn from skin to bones, or fashion a stone swept ocean. In the world of visual effects, anything is possible.
Michelle Yeoh: That’s right. Even the laws of 51)gravity can be defied in this world. The nominees for Best Achievement in Visual Effects are: Today the 52)coliseum of Rome stands in ruin but in the hands of nominees, John Nelson, Neil Corbould, Tim Burke, and Rob Harvey, the beauty and majesty37 of this ancient arena was restored to its original glory in Gladiator. In Hollow Man, Kevin Bacon plays a doctor who takes his own medicine. (Off screen voice: “I’m starting to feel something.”) Nominees: Scott E. Anderson, Craig Hayes, Scott Stokdyk, and Stan Parks used texture38 mapping and computer animation39 to slowly turn the visible into the invisible. And it was a perfectly40 nice day, when the Andrea Gail set out to sea, only to run into the awesome41 special effects of nominees -- Stefen Fangmeier, Habib Zargarpour, John Frazier and Walt Conti who did indeed create The Perfect Storm.
Chow Yun Fat: And the Oscar goes to... I knew it... your turn.
Michelle Yeoh: Right, go and announce it.
Chow Yun Fat: Your turn.
Michelle Yeoh: And the Oscar goes to Gladiator -- John Nelson, Neil Corbould, Tim Burke, and Rob Harvey.
Jenifer Lopez: And the Oscar goes to Bob Dylan for Things Have Changed from Wonder Boys.
Angelina Jolie: And the Oscar goes to Benicio Del Toro for Traffic.
Hilary Swan: And the Oscar goes to Russel Crowe in Gladiator.
