Chinese President Xi Jinping is calling on Asian countries to promote unity¹, cooperation, and the development of the continent.

He made the call at the ongoing² fourth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia.

Over 20 international leaders, including 11 heads of state, are attending the summit in Shanghai, which run through today.

CICA member states are expected to issue a Shanghai Declaration on commitments to strengthening strategic coordination³.

At the meantime, China and Russia have issued a joint⁴ statement, vowing⁵ to beef up bilateral⁶ cooperation in a wide range of fields.

The statement follows a meeting between the presidents of the two nations at that summit in Shanghai.

The two leaders have also overseen⁷ the start of a joint military exercise in the East China Sea.

Although a much anticipated gas deal has not been finalized⁸ just yet, the two countries have vowed⁹ to deepen cooperation in the petroleum¹⁰ industry, kick-start Russia's supply of natural gas to China as soon as possible and jointly¹¹ develop coal mines in Russia.
