5、Being interested in the relationship of language and thought, Whorf developed the idea that the structure of language determines the structure of habitual¹ thought in a society.

【分析】复合句。句子主干为Whorf developed the idea… 后跟that引导的同位语从句，对idea加以解释。同位语从句的翻译可以加冒号分译处理，也可以译为idea 的定语。Being interested in...为现在分词短语作原因状语,可以加上逻辑主语Whorf，译为主谓句，但后面需 要加上表示因果关系的连词表明和主句的关系，如“因此”，“因而”，“所以”等。

【点拨】1、句中develop与idea搭配,是“形成，得出”的意思，不可译为“发展”。2、habitual thought“习惯性思维”。

【译文】沃尔夫对语言与思维的关系很感兴趣，因此他形成了这样一种观点:在一个社会中，语言的结构决定习惯性思维的结构。

6、Whorf came to believe in sort of linguistic² determinism which, in its strongest form, states that language imprisons³ the mind, and that the grammatical patterns in a language can produce fa-reaching consequences for the culture of a society.

【分析】多重复合句。句子主干为Whorf came to believe in a sort of linguistic determinism。 which 引导定语从句，修饰linguistic determinism。定语从句中，in its strongest form states为插入语，states后跟两个并列的由and 连接的宾语从句: that language imprisons the mind 和 that the grammatical patterns in a language can produce far-reaching consequences for the culture of a society。由于which引导的定语从句较长，可作分译处理,其中嵌套的宾语从句按顺序翻译。

【点拨】1、come to表示一种转变，可译为“逐渐”。 2、imprison原意为“把…关在监狱中，囚禁”，本句中含义为“束缚思想，禁锢头脑”。

【译文】沃尔夫逐渐相信某种语言决定论观点，其极端说法是：语言禁锢思维，语言的语法结构能对一个社会的文化产生深远的影响。
