5、Tylor defined culture as “…that complex whole which includes belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities¹ and habits acquired by man as a member of society.

【分析】多重复合句。该句的主干是Tylor defined culture as …that complex whole …。 that complex whole 后接which引导的定语从句，从句中的一长窜宾语belief …habits 又有过去分词短语作其后置定语。 翻译时定语从句采用分译法顺译；过去分词短语前置翻译。

【点拨】1、define…as意思是“把…定义为”。2、whole 在此处作名词，译作“整体，完整体系”。3、acquire意为 “获得；学到”，不可译为“要求；规定”。

【译文】泰勒把文化定义为“一个复合整体，它包括人作为社会成员获得的信仰、艺术、道德、法律、风俗以及其他能力和习惯.。”

【分析】复合句。本句是完全倒装句，句子主干是Implicit … is the concept。within Tylor's definition 作句子状语；the concept后跟that引导的同位语从句，对其进行解释说明。同位语译成汉语时可用冒号或破折号连接，也可补充对先行词作进一步解释的引导词，如“即”、 “那就是”。
