Good afternoon, everybody. So glad you with us. I'm Catherine Callaway at the CNN Center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
A record turnout is expected in Florida where voters are casting ballots2 for their presidential nominees3. Nearly one million Floridians have already casted early an absentee ballot1. That is nearly the total number of Florida voters who took part in the 2000 primaries. The race is key for Republican candidates while results just won't count for Democrats4, because the Democratic Party punished the state for moving up its primary day.
Congress is hoping to help ease the economic worries amid Americans. The House will vote on a 115 million dollars stimulus5 package. That's been championed by the president. It is expected to pass easily before having a much tougher time though in the Senate. And the Federal Reserve is beginning a two-day meeting today. Many investors6 are expecting the FED to lower interest rates again. You may remember just last week they made a rare emergency cut. The moves are all part of an effort to help stimulate7 the economy.
Mexican authorities now had to go ahead to find and arrest Marine8 Corporal Cesar Laurean. A court there issued a warrant for the fugitive9. It's believed that he fled to his native Mexico to avoid charges in the death of fellow Marine Marina Lauterbach. Investigators10 in North Carolina say that he killed the pregnant women and buried her and her unborn child. Charred11 remains12 in his backyard.
It looks like you will get to see a full Grammy Awards show next month because the Writers Guild13's approved an interim14 deal to allow its striking members to actually write for the show. The guild says that it supports union musicians because they face many as the same issues with the new media that they do. The Grammy is there on February 10th.
And those are the headlines for you right now. Stay with CNN for more on these stories and other news of the day.
