From the CNN Center in Atlanta, I'm Asieh Namdar. Thanks for checking in with us. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Senator John McCain holds a news conference this hour in Coral Gables Florida. He could face questions about his use of a jet owned by his wife's company. The New York Times reports McCain's campaign used the plane for seven months and saved hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now that's not against any rules, but in the past McCain has supported legislation requiring presidential candidates pay their actual cost of flying on corporate1 jets.
A tale of horror from Austria, police believe a 73-year-old man held his daughter prisoner in a cellar for 24 years. The woman told police her father also raped2 her and that she gave birth to at least six children. Police started investigating when a 19-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital. A DNA3 test confirmed the man claiming to be her grandfather was also her biological father.
An Afghan lawmaker is one of the three people killed in a Taliban attack during the military parade in Kabul. President Hamid Karzai escaped unhurt. Afghan Security Forces say they killed or captured several of the attackers.
Thousands of people are attending the funeral of a young soldier in Ohio today. Staff Sergeant4 Matt Maupin's remains5 were discovered last month in Iraq. He was kidnapped west of Baghdad. The funeral is being held at the Great American Ball Park, the home of the Cincinnati Reds. The 20-year-old was captured April 9th, 2004 when his fuel convoy6 was attacked by insurgence7.
And finally an uplifting follow-up was story we first told you after the US-led invasion of Iraq. You may recall the vivid images of the looting at Iraq's National Museum. Today that museum is celebrating the return of some of the stolen artifacts. Syrian officials turned over more than 700 antiquities8 they seized in raids and gathered from an ask-no-questions amnesty program. Iraq hopes other countries will follow Syria's lead as it struggles to restore its cultural heritage.
