I'm Asieh Namdar at the CNN.com newsroom in Atlanta. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Presumptive Republican presidential candidate John McCain visited North Carolina today. He met with the reverends Franklin and Billy Graham this morning near Asheville. McCain is trying to cement the evangelical voting bloc1. Meantime, Senator Obama is treating this Sunday as a sabbatical from the campaign trail. Saturday night after both Obama and McCain addressed Latino Leadership Conference in Washington, the presumptive Democratic nominee2 took his wife Michelle out for a night on the town in Chicago.
Published reports say a Russian cover model fell to her death Saturday in New York. Streets were blocked off around the woman's apartment building in New York's financial district while police investigated. Twenty-year-old Ruslana Korshunova was once hailed by British Vogue3 as a face to be excited about.
Robert Mugabe has been sworn in as president of Zimbabwe after winning a highly-criticized runoff election. Final results show Mugabe won by more than a nine-one victory. The one-man runoff election was widely condemned4 throughout the world. His rival Morgan Tsvangirai dropped out of the race, claiming violence and vote rigging by Mugabe's supporter. He fled to the Dutch Embassy for sanctuary5.
Italian actress Sophia Loren says pictures of garbage piling in and around Naples has(have) brought her to tears. She's imploring6 people to clean up the mess. The problem started in December when garbage collectors stopped picking up the trash because two dumps were shut down by the request of nearby residents. Loren grew up just outside Naples and calls the situation tragic7. Naples has been cleaned up for the most part but the situation in surrounding areas is still bad. The government has since moved some of the waste to temporary landfills.
And on the Florida Panhandle, there is an animal visitor at the beach at Alligator8 Point, but this is no gator. A 375-pound black bear lumbered9 to the coastline before state wildlife officials tagged it with a tranquilizer dart10. In this photo you can see the green dart sticking in its ear. A state biologist rescued the bear as it tried to swim away and became groggy11. The bear wasn't hurt and was relocated to a much less populated area.
And those are the headlines this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, CNN is your source online, on TV, or when you're on the go.
