[00:14.00]for about US$80.No gallery showed his work during his life.
[00:15.00]Few people had heard of him.
[00:16.00]After his death in 1890,his fame developed slowly,but never stopped growing.
[00:17.00]He was born in the Netherlands in 1853,the son of a priest1.
[00:18.00]As a young man,he tried many different jobs.
[00:19.00]He worked in an art dealer's company,but disliked it,and left.
[00:20.00]He went to England,and became a language teacher.
[00:21.00]But he was always looking for some deeper purpose in his life.
[00:22.00]Next,he turned to religion.He worked as a missionary2 among the poor in Belgium,
[00:23.00]but quarrelled with his superiors,and abandoned that career.
[00:24.00]Finally,he decided3 to become a painter.
[00:25.00]For the rest of his life,
[00:26.00]he depended on the financial support of his brother Theo,
[00:27.00]the only person who believed in Van Gogh's ability.
[00:28.00]For ten years,from 1880 to 1890,Van Gogh produced his best paintings,
[00:29.00]until,sadly,he took his own life.
[00:30.00]It would be easy to say that he was mad.
[00:31.00]He was a difficult man,arguing with many people.
[00:32.00]After one quarrel,in late 1888,
[00:33.00]he was so upset that he cut off part of his own ear,and gave it to a young girl.
[00:34.00]It is impossible to know what he was thinking then.
[00:35.00]We definitely know that he spent a year in a mental hospital,from 1889-90.
[00:36.00]And yet,for most of this time he was completely sane4.
[00:37.00]We know this because he wrote hundreds of letters to The
[00:38.00]expressing his ideas and his work,
[00:39.00]and these letters show the clarity5 of his thinking.
[00:40.00]But to return to the question I raised earlier:
[00:41.00]yes,in my opinion,he deserves the fame he nowpossesses.
[00:42.00]I certainly admire his work tremendously.
[00:43.00]His paintings are realistic,not abstract.
[00:44.00]And yet they are not like photographs.
[00:45.00]His style is rough,and he paints with bright colours and thick strokes.
[00:46.00]The strong feelings inside his head are visible in his paintings,
[00:47.00]even when his subjects are flowers,trees or the sky.
[00:48.00]They are paintings full of powerful,honest emotions,
[00:49.00]the emotions which finally killed him.
[00:50.00]We are undoubtedly6 lucky to have the chance to view these masterpieces.
[00:51.00]Van Gogh exhibitions are very rare.
[00:52.00]Thousands of people will want to come to this the cultural event of the decade.
