1. New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg says there is no evidence that a failed car bombing in Times Square is linked to al-Qaeda or any other large terrorist organization. Bloomberg notes the investigation is in its early stages. Police found the SUV after being alerted by two street vendors.

2. President Barack Obama is calling the growing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico a massive and potentially unprecedented environmental disaster. The president vowed Sunday to do whatever it takes as long as it takes to stop the crisis. Obama added it could take many more days to stop the leak.

3. The National Weather Service says the Cumberland River in Nashville is expected to reach its crest sometime today. The forecast calls for a crest of 50 feet, about ten feet above flood stage. So far, 15 people have died after severe thunderstorms ripped across Tennessee and Mississippi this weekend.

4. Continental and United Airlines are one step closer to becoming one airline. The new airline would be run out of Unity’s hometown of Chicago and keep the united name. The new airline would be the world's largest. The deal is worth three billion dollars.
