1. On the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, President Barack Obama is calling the city of New Orleans a symbol of resilience and community. He told the crowd at Xavier University Sunday, his administration will stick with the Gulf Coast until the job of rebuilding from the deadly storm is done.

 

2. Just as Daniel moves out, another storm is making its way in. Several islands in the Eastern Caribbean are on watch as Hurricane Earl approaches. Forecasters say the category-1 storm could become a major hurricane by Tuesday.

 

3. Chile’s state-owned mining company is ready to start drilling an escape hole for 33 trapped miners. Officials say the men will help with their own rescue by helping clear away some of the thousands of tons of debris as it falls near their refuge.

 

4. And in Poland, a group of chefs hoping to get the town of Krakow went to the record books with this massive slice of pizza. The current record for the world's largest pizza is 445 yards. But the Poles are trying to break it with one more than twice that size
