Israel to Continue 'Active Defense'Art Chimes Jerusalem 4 Jul 2001 14:23 UTC
Israel will continue its 1)controversial policy of targeted attacks on Palestinian militants who are suspected of planning attacks on Israel. Palestinians have labeled the attacks 2)assassinations, but Israel is defending the policy it calls "active defense." Israel's 13-member security cabinet agreed to sustain the attacks against Palestinians suspected of planning attacks against Israel. One member of the security cabinet, Minister Shlomo Benizri, told Army Radio that Israel's response would be "perhaps slightly stronger." Another minister, Ephriam Sneh said the decision was 3)unanimous. Palestinians have denounced what they describe as a policy of "assassination," and U.S. officials have urged Israel to end the killings. Israel defends its action as self-defense. Shortly after the security cabinet ended its 4)session Wednesday, Palestinian sources reported the latest Israeli attack on a suspected militant. According to 5)media reports, army units attacked Fatah activist Hazem al-Natsheh in the West Bank town of Hebron. But Israeli military officials say they have no knowledge of the reported attack. Palestinians say Israel has killed about 40 6)activists since last September, when the uprising against Israel began. The two sides agreed to a 7)cease-fire arranged by CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) Director George Tenet last month, but violence continues with (8)casualties almost every day. The two sides are supposed to be (9)observing a seven-day quiet period before entering a cooling-off stage. The Palestinians say the quiet-period ended Wednesday, but the Israelis say that with the daily violence, yet it has not begun.
