Musharraf Calls on India to Resolve Kashmir Dispute Jim Teeple Agra, India 16 Jul 2001 06:53 UTC
Pakistan's president, General Pevez Musharraf, says Indian officials need to do more to 1)resolve the Kashmir dispute, if relations between the two countries are to significantly improve. General Musharraf made his comments just hours before his summit with India's Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is to end in the north Indian City, Agra. In his first public comments during the India/Pakistan summit, a 2)seemingly 3)frustrated General Musharraf called on his Indian hosts to do more to resolve the Kashmir dispute. Speaking to a group of senior Indian editors, Monday, General Musharraf made his views clear. "Ladies and Gentlemen, let us not remain under any illusion that the main issue 4)confronting us is Kashmir," he said. " I am not saying anything that is 5)unrealistic or imaginary." General Musharraf's called the Kashmir 6)dispute a human 7)tragedy and he criticized Indian officials who have said Kashmir has not been a major point of discussion at the summit saying most of the discussions have, in fact, been about Kashmir. General Musharraf's comments seem to 8)indicate he and Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee have made little progress in their stated goal of improving relations between New Delhi and Islamabad. Indian officials say meetings between the two men have been 9)cordial and that progress has been made on other issues than Kashmir.
