Wahid Orders Suspension of Indonesian Parliament Gary Thomas Jakarta 22 Jul 2001 23:54 UTC
Embattled Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid has ordered the 1)suspension of 2)parliament, plunging the country in a constitutional crisis. However, the military has said it will not 3)enforce the 4)decree and leaders in parliament say they will ignore it. Mr. Wahid's impeachment may now only be hours away. President Wahid issued the decree just after 1:00 a.m. local time Monday in a desperate 5)bid to 6)head off his impeachment by parliament for alleged corruption and 7)incompetence. However, parliamentary chairman Amien Rais says the impeachment session will proceed Monday morning, and the top military 8)commanders say they will not enforce the decree. Cabinet Secretary Marzuki Darusman resigned over the decree, as did Security Minister Agum Gumelar. In a telephone interview, Mr. Darusman told VOA the president is aware of the effect of his action, but that he was determined to 9)plunge ahead. He said, "I suppose that he's aware of this, but this is the course of action he's decided to take. And it's a decision, and there was no way of 10)dissuading him to do otherwise." Vice-President Megawati Sukarnoputri is poised to take over from Mr. Wahid.
