1. Lawmakers appear to be moving closer to a compromise that would prevent a government shutdown. Democrats say they are encouraged by efforts to narrow the gap on possible spending cuts. They will need to be in place by March 4th.

 

2. Pro-government forces are blocking access to one of the hot spots for protests in the Libyan capital. Residents have set up makeshift barricade to protect their neighborhood. They say Muammar Gaddafi's regime is arming civilian supporters and sending roving patrols around Tripoli.

 

3. The prime minister of New Zealand says this may be the country's worst disaster ever. The death toll from the Tuesday quake has risen to 145. There are still some 200 people missing.

 

4. Space shuttle Discovery has arrived at the International Space Station. The shuttle docked at the orbiting complex for the last time Saturday afternoon.
