英闻天下——27 Egypt's Draft Constitution Approved(在线收听

Egypt's draft constitution has been approved in referendum.

Egypt's Elections Commission says according to the official results, nearly two-thirds of eligible voters supported the draft constitution in the two-stage referendum.

Judge Samir Abu el-Matti is with the Supreme Election Commission.

"The percentage of the voters who cast their votes in the referendum is 32.9 per cent, the total number of the voters who cast a 'Yes' vote is 10,693,911 with a percentage of 63.8 per cent, the total number of the voters who cast a 'No' vote is 6,61,101 with a percentage of 36.2 per cent."

The initial results of the referendum showed over 60 percent of voters approved of the disputed constitution.

Late in November, 85 members of the Constituent Assembly approved the draft constitution after a 17-hour marathon vote.

Morsi's mainly Islamist supporters say the new constitution will secure democracy and encourage stability.

But most liberals, leftists and Coptic Christians observers consider that the draft written by the Islamist-dominated assembly does not represent all Egyptians.

The country has recently witnessed mass protests by both opponents and supporters of the constitution, which have occasionally turned violent.

Parliamentary elections must take place within two months.
