However, thousands of highly trained dogs in the world today are working in a very honorable profession: they are Seeing Eye dogs guiding the blind. The first Seeing Eye dog was a German shepherd named Buddy. In Switzerland, Buddy’s owner, Dorothy, was training dogs for police work and saving people from dangers. Then in 1927, she wrote an article for a newspaper about dogs being trained in Germany to help blind people. Morris, a young blind American, heard about the article and wrote to Dorothy to ask if there was such a dog to help him. That letter led Morris to spend five weeks in Switzerland learning to be guided by Buddy. Buddy was with Morris when he returned to the United States. Newspaper reporters were waiting for them in New York. They couldn’t believe that a dog could safely guide a blind man through a modern city. Buddy surprised them by leading her master across the streets through the heavy traffic. (Text 5) Mark Twain, the famous American writer, was travelling in France. He was going by train to Dijon.
