Samuel al-Sailly didn't just buy rough diamonds, but black market diamonds. Smuggling them to market Antwerp, he avoided taxes and any awkward questions where these stones came from. In 2000, his obsession took him back to Sierra Leone. He was born and grew up there before his Lebanon family moved away before civil in Gulf and west Afgan country(?). Traveling directly to Sierra Leone was too dangerous. Backed by a rich Lebanon diamond merchant Azis Nasur, Al-Sailly went to neighbouring Libyria instead. In hotel suite, he courted high ranking official and President Charles Taylor's corrupted regime. The former leader is now on trial for war crimes. If you don't have the government on your sides, you cannot reach the diamond'. Within days, his efforts paid off with influx of quality rough diamonds. All that I was doing in Libyria is paying and also most of time ignored asking where it is from. The best way is not knowing where it is from.
