World soccer is in turmoil this morning over claims of widespread corruption. Fourteen people, including nine current and former FIFA officials, have been arrested and charged. Seven of them were taken into custody after a raid at a luxury hotel in the Swiss city of Zurich. They are accused of racketeering, fraud and money laundering involving tens of millions of dollars of over more than two decades. ‘They were expected to uphold the rules that keep soccer honest and to protect the integrity of the game. Instead, they corrupted the business of worldwide soccer to serve their interests and to enrich themselves.’ Australia’s most notorious paedophile priest says Church leaders knew about his offending as early as the 1960s. Gerald Ridsdale will continue his evidence to the Child Abuse Royal Commission via video link from prison today. Ridsdale has admitted abusing hundreds of children over several decades in and around the Victorian city of Ballarat.
Federal Attorney-General George Brandis says a letter from Sydney siege gunman Man Haron Monis did not seem to indicate he was a threat to the community. Monis wrote to Senate Brandis in October last year, less than two months before the deadly Lindt Café siege, asking him if it was legal to contact the Islamic State leader.
And the man who raped and murdered Melbourne ABC staff Jill Meagher is facing more jail time. Adrian Bayley will be sentenced today for three more rapes committed years before he killed Ms Meagher. |
