A Commissioner appointed by the pope to protect children in the Catholic Church has described Cardinal George Pell as almost sociopathic in his response to child abuse victims. Peter Saunders is himself a survivor of abuse. Cardinal Pell has described the comments as outrageous, saying he’s always taken a strong stand against child sexual abuse. Mr. Saunders says Cardinal Pell should be removed. ‘And I think it’s critical that he’s moved aside, that he’s sent back to Australia, and the pope takes the strongest action against him’. Peter Saunders speaking on 60 Minutes last night. Bill Shorten will introduce his gay marriage bill into Parliament this morning despite calls for a multi-party approach to the issue. But without government support, debate on the bill is expected to be adjourned.
China has brushed aside demands to slow its expansion in the South China sea. Defence Minister Kevin Andrews has joined the United States and other nations in opposing China’s large scale land reclamation in the region. Mr. Andrews has told a security conference in Singapore that Australia is concerned about any military build-up on the artificial islands.
An inquest will begin today into Blue Mountains bushfires eighteen months ago which destroyed around two-hundred homes. The townships of Springwood, Winmalee and Yellow Rock were the hardest hit by the fires in October 2013. The Blue Mountains council estimates that one-hundred-million dollars was lost because of a droping tourism in the wake of the fires. |
