 February 2nd, 1943A major victory for the Soviet Union during World War II, as the last of Nazi Germany’s forces in the Battle of Stalingrad surrender. The Nazis and their excess partners lost some 800,000 troops in the month-long battle. The Soviet lost more than a million soldiers. 1971Idi Amin seizes power through a military coup in the east African country of Uganda. His brutal 8-year regime is believed to have killed hundreds of thousands of people.

1882James Joyce, the Irish author whose works include Ulysses and Finnegans Wake is born in Dublin.
1996Gene Kelly, dancer, actor and choreographer of Singing in the Rain fame, dies in Beverly Hills, California. He was 83.
And 1979Punk rock musician Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols dies of a drug overdose in New York. He was 21.
