 March 28th, 1979 - America's worst commercial nuclear accident takes place at the Three Mile Island plant near Middletown, Pennsylvania. Though the health effects are considered small, the accident strengthens opposition to the nation's nuclear power industry.

1969 -“Soldiers, sailors, and airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force, you are about to embark upon the great crusade towards which we have striven these many months.” In Washington, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who led the D-Day Invasion of World War Two, dies at age 78.
1939 - The Spanish Civil War effectively ends as Madrid falls to the forces of General Francisco Franco. He rules Spain as its dictator for more than three and a half decades.
1987 -“The hills are alive with the sound of music ...” Maria von Trapp, whose life inspired the musical and movie “The Sound of Music”, dies in Vermont at age 82.
And 1955 -“She said here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down ...” Country singer Reba McEntire is born in McAlester, Oklahoma.
