 The Old Bailey 老贝利 The Central Criminal Court also has a famous nickname.Well, the courthouse is also known as The Old Bailey. It comes from the street where the courthouse is located. The street follows the line of the original wall of the city which was known as ‘The Bailey’. We followed Michael Ramston inside the Old Bailey. There are 18 courtrooms linked by imposing waiting areas, that usually bustle with lawyers, the relatives of those on trial, and journalists. For 100 years, these courts have been hearing criminal cases that have captured the interest of the nation. One of the famous trials at the Old Bailey was that of Dr Crippen who poisoned his wife and then disposed of her body in a number of horrible ways. Also, Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be executed in Britain was tried and convicted at the Old Bailey in 1955 for murdering her lover. More recently, the infamous Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, was convicted in 1981 for murdering 13 women in the north of England.Let’s move a bit deeper inside the courthouse. Now we’re looking at the Dead Man’s Walk. The idea was the condemned person was frankly left with no choice in turning round, so as you get to the bottom here, there is absolutely no space for that person to turn around, and as they went down to the end there, turn to the right, they met their maker at the drop.
