CCTV9英语新闻:CPPCC members on preserving environment(在线收听

In Beijing, CPPCC members have held a news conference on how to preserve the environment and promote green development. They discussed the government's determination to protect the environment, the severity of climate change, and what role the media could play in this aspect.

"China's CO2 emission will peak at around 2030, and we are trying to achieve this a bit earlier. The measures are in line with international common practice. First. it's very important to conserve energy and improve energy efficiency. This is related to the use of new energy," said Xie Zhenhua, Vice Chairman, Nat'l Comm. of Population, Resources & Environment.

"Second, we'll develop renewable energy, or zero-carbon energy. Third, forests carbon sink will be increased. Fourth, we'll adjust the economic and industrial structures to cut carbon emissions."

"On January the 3rd this year, the World Meteorological Organization announced that 2015 was the most difficult year since 1860, when the first meteorological report was made," said Qin Dahe, Standing Committee member, CPPCC.

"The global average land surface temperature last year increased by about one degree compared with the 19th century, and was 0.76 degree higher than the normal average level. This matters a lot...as it lifted the sea level by two to three millimetres each year."

"I'd like to speak on behalf of the press. The media can do a lot of work to contribute to environmental conservation. The government should give more green lights to media reports for the country's green development," said Bai Yansong, Standing Committee member, CPPCC.
