Lancang and Mekong are the names for the same trans-boundary river, and LMC stands for the cooperation among the six nations along the river. The Mekong origins from China's Tanggula Mountains in the northwest. It runs through Yunnan province, and flows to Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The upper reaches in China is called Lancang river.

It's a natural bond of these six nations. The overall Mekong river drains an area of 795 thousand square kilometers. Some 326 million people are living in the region. The average annual economic growth is about 7 percent, making it one of the most promising regions in Asia or the world.

However, the economic development of the Mekong subregions started late, and the level of development is falling behind some neighbouring regions. To mend the gap, the Mekong river nations intend to actively involve in regional cooperation and construction of infrastructure.

And China proposed the establishment of the mechanism in 2014. Interconnectivity, production capacity, cross-border economy, water resources, agriculture and poverty alleviation are five priority directions for the LMC.
