Two Canadian mining companies are merging to become the world's third-largest gold mining company. Goldcorp and Glamis Gold will become a single company named Goldcorp worth about $21.3 billion. (The largest gold mining company, Barrick Gold, is also a Canadian company.) The combined company plans to produce 3 million ounces of gold a year. Some investors felt that the acquisition puts too much emphasis in the company on riskier, long-term projects, and GoldCorp's stock price suffered as a result. Two years ago, Glamis tried to prevent the takeover of Goldcorp by Wheaton River Minerals, which successfully acquired the company and took the Goldcorp name as well.
