The delegation consists of all the Chinese gold medalists and those who gave outstanding performances.

On the list are women's volleyball coach Lang Ping, men's ping pong coach Liu Guoliang, swimmers Sun Yang, veteran paddler Lin Dan and rising star "swimming girl" Fu Yuanhui.

As part of their agenda in the city, the athletes will give badminton and table tennis competition demonstrations and diving performances.

Excitement has been building in the city since the Olympics in Rio came to an close last weekend.

On Monday, all 5,700 tickets for the three public events were sold out in just three hours.

Many say the performance of the athletes in Rio has inspired them.

"The Chinese athletes were able to get such a great result in the Olympics. Every Chinese person should feel proud of it. In the past, when the Chinese people were looked down upon by others, we did not even have the chance to take part in sporting events. But today, we are able to achieve such a great result. This shows that our nation has become stronger, our economy has grown, people's lives have improved and the sports industry has advanced."

For many, the one of the highlights of the Games was the victory of the Chinese women's volleyball team.

"I was very emotional watching this year's games, as usual. Especially, a few days ago, on Sunday morning, our women's volleyball team won the gold. I watched the live broadcast for 2.5 hours, and used a dozen tissues to wipe my tears. So I think coach Lang Ping and her team will be the focus during this visit. Everyone in Hong Kong is very excited and eager to welcome these elite athletes, these heroes of our nation."

China won 26 gold, 18 silver and 26 bronze medals at the Rio Games, ranking third in gold medal tally after the United States and Britain.

The Chinese team gained less golds in Rio than in London and Beijing, but Kenneth Fok, chief of the Hong Kong Olympic delegation says the public are seeing beyond the medal tally.

"In the past, it would be gold medalists who would come to visit Hong Kong during such events. But now in 2016, the public pays more attention to the diversification, diverse characters and other highlights of the athletes. Fu Yuanhui will be coming. Lin Dan, although he unfortunately didn't get a medal, he is still a magnet to us. The athletes were so great in most team contests, especially the women's volleyball team and Lang Ping. They are all so inspiring to us as Chinese people."

After the trip to Hong Kong, the athletes will also make a stop in Macao.

The visit to Hong Kong and Macao by mainland Olympians has become a tradition every four years after the games since 2000.
