The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution authorizing it to sue President Barack Obama for what Republican leaders describe as his overreach of authority.

Its sponsors say Obama exceeded his powers when he delayed an insurance deadline in his healthcare law.

Obama himself has dismissed the lawsuit as a waste of time.

Republicans in Congress have complained that the president has exceeded his constitutional authority on numerous occasions, in order to bypass Congress by issuing executive orders.

In his six years in office Obama has issued 183 executive orders, compared to 291 across George W Bush's eight years.

The leaders of the G7 industrialized nations are threatening more sanctions against Russia, accusing Moscow of continuing to support the rebels in eastern Ukraine.

The leaders of the world's richest industrialized nations are calling on Russia to secure its border to stop the flow of weapons, equipment and militants into Ukraine.

Moscow has denied any involvement in eastern Ukraine.

The threat from the G7 comes just a day after both the United States and European Union unveiled sweeping sanctions targeting Russia's defense, energy and finance sectors.

The Russian government is slamming the sanctions as "destructive and short-sighted".
