Chinese President Xi Jinping has begun his three-day visit to India in the western state of Gujarat, where Indian Prime Minister Naendra Modi governed for 12 years.

The president's hours-long stay saw not only key agreements signed but also relaxed protocols, which observers say set a positive tone for bilateral ties.

In Ahmedabad, President Xi and Prime Minister Modi witnessed the signing of two agreements, one concerning an industrial park in Gujarat and the other on regional cooperation between Gujarat and south China's Guangdong province.

More documents are expected to be signed covering a range of sectors, including high-speed rail, in New Delhi, President Xi's next stop after his six-hour visit to Gujarat.

Typhoon Kalmaegi has left at least seven people dead and one missing, and caused huge economic losses, since coming ashore in south China on Tuesday.

Six fatalities were reported in Guangxi, while one death and one missing have been reported in Hainan.

The tropical storm has also collapsed 1,600 houses and closed 28 airports and ports.

Nearly six million people in south China have also been affected.

Direct economic losses in Hainan and Guangdong provinces are estimated to reach nearly 7 billion yuan, approximately 1.1 billion US dollars.
