Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has made a statement in connection with the protests in Hong Kong this week, saying Hong Kong's affairs are China's internal affairs.

Meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Washington, Wang Yi is also calling on countries around the world to respect China's sovereignty.

"The Chinese government has very firmly and clearly stated its position. Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs. All countries should respect China's sovereignty, and this is also a basic principle governing international relations."

At the same time, Wang Yi says it's Beijing's belief Hong Kong government has the capability to properly handle the current situation in accordance with the law.

Thousands of demonstrators have been taking part in demonstrations in Hong Kong since this past weekend; The so-called Occupy group is opposed to the new plans for universal suffrage in the city.
