Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is promising to increase the government's commitment toward the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.

At the same time, he says China wants to cooperate with other countries in helping combat HIV.

The comments have been made ahead of World AIDS Day today.

Latest figures suggest the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in China had hit nearly half a million as of the end of October.

The Chinese premier says more needs to be done to strengthen HIV screening, with a focus on high risk groups.

The government is also working to ensure HIV-positive patients have access to equal employment and medical treatment.

Hong Kong's "Occupy Central" protesters have clashed with police early this morning as they tried to encircle the government headquarters.

Protesters say they wanted to occupy the road until later this morning to try to prevent government officials from getting to work.

Hong Kong Police have been trying to clear the protest sites across the city following a series of court orders.

There have been increasing calls in Hong Kong for the protesters to stop blocking the roads amid growing concerns over the impact on people's daily lives and the local economy.
