Dialogue 1

Jingjing: Mark, it looks like you've recovered from that cold you had last week.

Mark: I'm no longer coughing all the time, thank goodness. But I still haven't gotten all the way over it.

Jingjing: Take care of yourself. The last few days of recovery are the most important, if you want to avoid coming down with something again.

Mark: I definitely want to stay healthy. Jingjing, what's your advice about staying active during the winter? I get lots of exercise at other times of year, but in winter, it's another story.

Jingjing: I see you've put on a little weight.

Mark: Yeah, and I feel sluggish most days until I've had my coffee.

Jingjing: Well, the days are shorter. So, it's no surprise people are less energetic.

Mark: Yeah, I'm at my best every spring and fall. Winters are tough for me.

Jingjing: You're not the only one. Anyway, you asked about staying active. Have you thought about joining a gym again?

Mark: You know me, Jingjing. I'd pay for the membership, go a few times, and then feel guilty for the remaining months.

Jingjing: I think better of you, Mark. I bet you could get into the habit.

Mark: But winter is the worst possible time for that, especially for swimming. That's like 3 hours of trouble for 45 minutes in the pool.

Jingjing: So, that might be the right time to form a good habit, when it's most difficult, and becomes easier in the months that follow.

Mark: Well, I'll think it over. There are quite a few gyms near where I live.

Jingjing: You could go have a look. Hey, my afternoon break is in another hour. We could talk more then.

Mark: OK. If any more ideas come to mind, I'd be happy to hear them then.

Jingjing: See you soon.

New words :

coming down with something

getting sick, usually for seasonal illness rather than serious diseases

Dialogue2

Jingjing: There you are again, Mark. Now I've got a few more minutes to chat. What was it we were talking about?

Mark: Ah, just what to do in winter. It's hard to get enough exercise.

Jingjing: Oh, right. Well, you could do like me and join a dance studio. I go there once or twice a week and get a great workout.

Mark: That's worse than a gym for me, I'm afraid. Besides being an extra trip out on one of my few free afternoons, it's only a chance for me to show others how clumsy I am.

Jingjing: Your parents should have put you in more sports classes when you were a kid.

Mark: Oh, they did! I was in five or six different sports clubs and teams. I wasn't a total jock, but I was pretty athletic.

Jingjing: Did you ever try martial arts?

Mark: Yeah, I did, and I took to it pretty quickly. Hey, that's actually a good idea, especially now that I'm living in the land of Kung Fu.

Jingjing: Ha ha. Well, it still might not be easy to find a suitable teacher. Perhaps as a go-between, you could try Tai-Chi. There are a lot of instructional videos online. You could pick up a few moves, and then try them out in the park.

Mark: Ha ha. That'd be a good preview of my elderly years.

Jingjing: Seriously, it'd be best if you learned yoga or Tai-Chi sometime soon.

Mark: Hmm, yoga, eh? That's something I could do indoors.

Jingjing: Sure, it'd be good for you to do that. But there's no substitute for a walk outside, or even a run.

Mark: You're right, Jingjing. Once I get outside for a walk, I usually explore a bit and end up getting an hour or more of decent exercise. I should step out on my free mornings at the same times I set out for work most days.

Jingjing: That's a great idea. It's what I do.

Mark: Thanks for talking with me about this, Jingjing.

Jingjing: I'm glad to help. Hey, one more thing. Winter is a great time to get cozy at home. You should set a time once a week to stay warm and read.

Mark: That'd be something to look forward to, rather than feeling guilty about.

Jingjing: Yeah. Treat yourself well. I'm expecting to see that pot belly of yours disappear in the coming weeks.

New words :

someone who plays lots of sports

martial arts 武术

kung fu, karate, taekwondo – sports that train people to fight

a big belly (while the person is not fat overall)
