Ohio has a statewide ban on same-sex marriage. But a federal judge has just ruled that gay and lesbian marriages performed out of state must be recognized by Ohio.

That means same-sex couples can try for the same benefits as married straight couples in Ohio, including property rights and the right to make some medical decisions for their partners.

The state is expected to appeal the federal judge's ruling.
