A 2014 breach of Yahoo impacted at least half a billion accounts, potentially putting at risk email addresses, birth dates and other personal information.

Acting Assistant Attorney General Mary McCord says the Justice Department has charged four people with the cyberattack, including two officers with the Russian federal security service:

The U.S. has charged foreign nationals with cyberattack before, but this is the first criminal case brought against Russian government officials. It comes amid a separate investigation of Russian efforts to interfere with the 2016 election.
