More than 300 people were killed annually by lightning strikes in the 1940's when there were fewer people,and though the amount of lightning strikes haven't changed, 13 people have died this year in the U.S. on pace for a record low. Primarily, according to the National Weather Service, because we're more educated and staying out of the way, spending more time inside homes or cars. Researchers say the wrong place to be when you hear thunder... is anywhere outside.
