If approved by two-thirds of the Senate, the override would be the first of Trump's presidency.

Trump rejected the bill last week, saying it failed to limit social media companies he claims were biased against him during his reelection campaign.

He also opposes language that allows for the renaming of military bases that honor Confederate leaders.

China is calling on the United States to stop using the Hong Kong issue to interfere with China's domestic affairs.

The U.S. Embassy in Beijing released a statement on Monday, calling on mainland authorities to release 12 fugitives from Hong Kong and permit them to depart the country.

The 12 are standing trial on suspicion of illegally crossing the border or organizing others to illegally cross the border.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian urged the U.S. to respect China's judicial sovereignty.

European Union ambassadors have given their unanimous approval to the post-Brexit trade deal with the UK.

It still needs approval from the EU legislature, which is expected to come in February. The UK's House of Commons is expected to approve it on Wednesday.

The UK left the EU almost a year ago, but remained within the bloc's economic embrace during a transition period that ends on December 31.

The agreement will ensure Britain and the bloc can continue to trade in goods without tariffs or quotas.

That could help protect the nearly 900 billion U.S. dollars in annual trade between the two sides, and the hundreds of thousands of jobs that rely on it.

Novavax has begun a large late-stage study of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine in the United States.

The company made the announcement on Monday after delaying the trial twice due to issues in scaling up the manufacturing process.

Novavax CEO Stanley Erck says up to 30,000 volunteers will be enrolled across 115 sites in the United States and Mexico for the trial.

"In addition to running clinical trials, we're also doing something that's unprecedented, which is to stand up manufacturing facilities in eight different countries at the same time."

Novavax lags behind other drugmakers in the global race for COVID-19 vaccines, with Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna already granted emergency use.

The company has signed deals to supply millions of doses to several countries including the UK, where a late-stage study is underway.

Trials of the Novavax vaccine are also being carried out in South Africa and Australia, with interim data expected early next year.

The Verbier tourism board in Switzerland has denied reports that hundreds of British tourists have fled quarantine from the Swiss ski resort.

Swiss media earlier said 200 Britons left Verbier on Sunday, before the end of their required 10-day quarantine period.

On December 21, the Swiss government ordered people who had arrived from the United Kingdom and South Africa since December 14th to undergo a 10-day quarantine.
