China's GDP tops 114.36 trillion yuan in 2021

Data from China's National Bureau of Statistics showed that the country's gross domestic product topped 114.3 trillion yuan last year.

That's an 8 percent increase from the figure of 2020.

Another large eruption detected at Tonga volcano

A monitoring station in Australia says another "large eruption" has been detected at the Tonga volcano.

It comes a few days after a massive underwater eruption triggered tsunami waves around the Pacific.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre also says it has detected large waves in the area.

It says there are no known earthquakes of significant size to generate this wave.

China ready to help tsunami-hit Tonga: Foreign Ministry

China says it is ready to provide support to Tonga after the Pacific nation was hit by continuous volcanic eruptions and tsunami waves.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin says China also extends condolences to the government and people of Tonga.

An underwater volcano off Tonga erupted over the weekend, triggering warnings of tsunami waves and evacuation orders.

The impact was also felt across the Pacific and in countries such as Japan and New Zealand.

Local authorities say two people drowned off a beach in northern Peru after unusually high waves were recorded following the eruption.

Spring Festival travel rush begins

This year's Spring Festival travel rush officially begins today.

Authorities estimate that nearly 1.2 billion trips will be made during the 40-day period.

That represents a 36 percent increase from the same period last year. 

Djokovic leaves Australia after losing visa appeal

Novak Djokovic has reportedly left Australia after losing his court battle to stay in the country.

The Federal Court dismissed the world No. 1's application to have his visa cancellation overturned one day before the start of the Australian Open.

The Serbian player said he was disappointed at the decision.

Djokovic arrived in Australia after being given a vaccine exemption.

His visa was rejected twice and three Federal Court judges upheld a decision by the immigration minister to cancel his visa on grounds of public interest.

Former Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita dies: family

Former Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has died at the aged of 76.

The cause of death was not yet known.

Keita came to power in 2013 and was re-elected in 2018.

He was overthrown in 2020 by the National Committee for the Salvation of the People after months of street protests to challenge his regime.

Russian troops to stay near Ukrainian border amid NATO pressure: Kremlin

The Kremlin says Russia will station troops on its own territory near the Ukrainian border due to tensions with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov says Russia has to take measures of precaution in response to the NATO military build-up near the Russian borders.

He stressed that Russia is not considering military action but is "ready to take countermeasures" if a consensus cannot be reached.

Life is slowly returning to normal to Shaanxi, after the northeastern Chinese province battled a recent wave of local COVID-19 infections.

U.S. sees highest rate of children COVID-19 hospitalizations

Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that pediatric hospitalizations related to COVID-19 in the country have hit the highest level since the start of the pandemic.

The country is averaging 893 new hospital admissions each day for children 17 years and under.

The highest hospitalization rates among all children occurred between the ages of newborn to 4, because children in this age group are not yet eligible for vaccination.

"Scream" tops North American box office in opening weekend

Horror film "Scream" sprinted to the top of the box office in its North American debut, unseating "Spider-Man: No Way Home" with a three-day estimate of 30 million U.S. dollars.

The Paramount film took in 18 million dollars from 50 markets over the weekend for a global total of 48.6 million dollars.

Its predecessor in the "Scream" film franchise earned around 38 million dollars in North America for a global total of 97 million in 2011.
