It is not the critic who counts ; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled or

where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is

actually in the arena ; whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives

valiantly ; who errs and comes short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the

great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows the triumph of high

achievement; and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place

shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.

重要的不是批评家，不是指出强者是怎样跌倒的或有作为的人在哪里本应该做得更好

的人。荣誉属于投身于竞技场的人：他满脸污垢，沾满灰尘、汗水和血；他勇敢拼搏，失

误多多，令人失望；他懂得伟大的热忱、伟大的奉献，献身于崇高的事业；成功时，他体
