Good morning from the CNN center in Atlanta, I'm Reggie Aqui, thanks for checking in. We are going to do a quick look at the headlines right now. Pirates have seized the cargo ship along with its crew of 20 Americans. A spokesman for the ship's owner says that the Maersk Alabama cargo ship was about 300 miles off the Somali coast when the pirates attacked. The company says it's trying to contact relatives of the kidnapped crewmen. Ten cities are now set up among the worst damaged areas of central Italy after Monday's 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck. Tens of thousands are said to be homeless and 260 people are dead from the quake. Meantime, Pope Benedict XVI says he would like to visit L'Aquila, one of the worst hit spots and he says he's praying for victims and their families. Wall Street is open for business. And traders have been fretting over corporate earnings. Futures were down this morning, Asian stock markets fell sharply on Wednesday. Investors unloaded shares across a variety of sectors from banks to energy firms. In Japan, exporters were hurt by a slightly rise in the yen against the dollar. President Obama returned home late last night from an overseas trip which included an unannounced stop in Iraq. He and Iraqi leaders met at Camp Victory in Baghdad. A visit into the Green Zone had to be called off because of a sandstorm. The president praised the troops for their work while also saying it's time for Iraqis to take charge. A gunman opened fire at a Christian retreat in Southern California, killing one person and injuring three others. Police are still investigating what happened but police think the alleged shooter may be among those hurt. The retreat belongs to a Korean church organization. That's what's happening right NOW IN THE NEWS. Please stick with us here at CNN.com and CNN.com/live. We'll bring you updates right here throughout the day. |
