1.A massive fire North of Los Angeles has doubled in size, burning nearly two dozen homes and threatening thousands more. It's among at least eight fires currently burning in California. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has issued emergency declarations in four counties.

 2.Massachusetts lawmakers have scheduled a hearing on whether to change state law and let the governor name an interim replacement for Senator Ted Kennedy. The change was requested by Kennedy himself shortly before he died and Governor Deval Patrick supports the idea.

 3.Emergency workers along Mexico's Baja Californian peninsula are planning evacuations ahead of Hurricane Jimena. The storm is just short of category-5 status with winds nearly 150 miles per hour.

 4.And Guadalajara finally boasts the world's biggest mariachi band. Some 549 musicians get together to win the record for the birthplace of mariachi. The group played several songs in just over ten minutes.
