[04:30.32]When the Quaker,Elizabeth,married Joseph Fry,
[04:36.48]is seemed as if her life would be comfortable and peaceful.
[04:42.36]But Elizabeth was not content with her easy life and her growing family.
[04:49.72]She saw many poor people living near her and she wanted to help them.
[04:56.57]One day she was asked to visit a prison.
[05:01.24]At first the prison officers did not want to let her visit the women prisoners
[05:08.51]becaurse they feared the prisoners would attack her,
[05:13.55]but Elizabeth was not afraid.
[05:17.31]She realised that the prisoners behaved badly
[05:22.59]because they were being treated like animals.
[05:27.34]Thye had no beds,clean clothes,food or heating.
[05:33.58]Any child born in prison had to stay there and had no chance of an education.
[05:41.63]This meant they would probably have to bag
[05:46.36]or steal when they grew up and then would return to prison.
[05:52.73]So the first thing Elizabeth did was to provide food,
[05:58.97]clean clothes and straw for beds.
[06:04.02]Later she began a prison school for the children and taught the women to sew,
[06:11.96]knit and make goods to sell.
[06:16.50]In this way they were able to make a little money
[06:21.57]for themselves and gain some self-respect.
[06:26.72]Her kindnes helped her gain the friendship of the prisoners
[06:32.49]and they began to try to improve their conditions for themselves.
[06:38.13]Later Elizabeth was asked to go to the leaders of Britain
[06:44.30]to discuss how to improve the conditions for prisoners.
[06:49.94]Of course she did not do all the work on her own.
[06:55.58]Other Quaker women helped her
[06:59.84]and went around the country raising money for her work.
[07:05.59]Soem people did not like her ideas and quarrelled with her.
[07:12.07]They said that she should spend more time with her family.
[07:17.52]Other people said she enjoyed being famous too much.
[07:23.69]But her husband,Joseph,supported and encouraged her,
[07:30.25]so she continued working to help improve the lives of poor prisoners till she died.
[07:37.69]Her ideas did not disappear after her death
[07:43.46]and her work was remembered in 1947
[07:48.82]when the Quakers were given the Nobel Peace Prize
