Confusion Over Alleged1 Plan to Arrest Indonesia's Former Police Chief

Indonesian officials are denying reports that President Abdurrahman Wahid ordered the arrest of a top political 1)rival. The statement comes as police staged a show of support outside the house of national police chief General Suroyo Bimantoro, who has been locked in a power-struggle with President Wahid.
State Secretary Marzuki Darusman said reports that President Wahid ordered the arrest of the national police chief were the result of a "misunderstanding." He said, "I'm authorized2 by the president to 2)categorically state that such an order has never been issued by the president."
Earlier in the day, a presidential spokesman announced that President Wahid had ordered authorities to "take firm legal action against those 3)guilty of 4)insubordination." Asked if the order applied3 to renegade National Police Chief General Suroyo Bimantoro, the spokesman replied that it did. The spokesman added that the decision to carry out the order rested with Indonesia's Defense4 Minister Agum Gumelar.
But Secretary Darusman said the defense minister wants to find a 5)compromise solution. "The minister suggested that that measure be delayed and 6)alternative steps be taken to resolve the problem within the police at this point," he said.
Mr. Darusman's comments came after about two dozen police and an 7)armored car surrounded the home of General Bimantoro in a show of support. Local media report that the general is currently in Singapore for a medical 8)check-up.
President Wahid and General Bimantoro have been 9)waging a test of wills since June, when the President fired the general because he said he would not support the president's plan to declare a state of emergency and 10)dissolve parliament. Despite making some statements indicating he would obey the president's order, the general has refused to step down.
Lawmakers are widely expected to impeach5 the president for 11)alleged mismanagement when they meet on August 1.
