Croatian General Rahim Ademi has 1)voluntarily 2)surrendered to officials of the U.N. War Crimes Tribunal and is now in their 3)custody at the tribunal's 4)detention center. He is the first Croatian army officer to be accused of crimes against Serbs in Croatia and will soon answer to charges of crimes against humanity allegedly committed in 1993.
General Ademi left Zagreb's airport Wednesday morning saying his conscience is clear and he would prove it before the Hague war crimes 5)tribunal. General Ademi is an ethnic1 Albanian by birth. He says he is proud of his role in the 1991 to 1995 war, where Croats were trying to regain2 land taken by Serbs in the central Krajina region.
But 6)prosecutors3 say as acting4 commander in the region, General Ademi is responsible for the attack on the Medak pocket that killed at least 38 Serb 7)civilians - many of them women and elderly people - and two Serb soldiers who had been captured. They cite an 86 year old woman burned alive in her house, and another woman - 71 years old - whose throat was slit5.
In addition, prosecutors say that 164 homes and 148 barns were destroyed, leaving the area completely 8)uninhabitable. For those crimes, says 9)prosecution6 spokeswoman Florence Hartmann, General Ademi is charged with persecution7, murder, and plunder8. "Rahim Ademi decided9 to voluntarily surrender," she says. "The prosecution, therefore hopes he will cooperate with the prosecution and answers its questions."
Prosecutors have 10)indicted another Croatian military leader, believed to be retired10 General Ante Gotovina. He is now on the run from Croatian police who have orders to arrest him.
Cooperation with the Hague Tribunal has 11)triggered threats of 12)unrest by Croatian veterans groups still loyal to late nationalist president Franjo Tudjman. But opinion polls show that the majority of the public supports the new government's 13)stance to surrender war crimes suspects and cooperate with the court.
