LONDON, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Subway workers in London are planning to stage five days of strike in late April and early May against ticket office closures and job losses, Britain's National Union of Rail, Maritime1 and Transport Workers (RMT) announced Thursday.
RMT is calling on its members to walk out for two days from 9 p.m. of April 28 and again for three more days from 9 p.m. of May 5.
The decision came after London mayor Boris Johnson announced that all 260 ticket offices in the city's subway stations will be closed, which could lead to the loss of nearly 960 jobs.
The General Grades Committee, RMT's decision-making body, are "outraged2" that after eight weeks of discussions London Underground is still maintaining that every ticket office will close by the end of 2015, RMT's acting3 General Secretary Mick Cash said in a statement.
"This union views London Underground's commitments as dishonest and a total breach4 of trust between them and ourselves, our members, London's public, and passengers," he added.
The union leader said that the job slashes5 are only the "first tranche of cuts to the staffing levels and safety culture on the tube" due to government imposed austerity cuts to London Underground and Transport for London (TfL).
"This union's position is clear: we will not stand by and allow this attack on station staff," Cash stressed.
The union leader noted6 that after the job cuts not only will London's tube passengers lose their ticket offices but there will be "massively fewer" staff to help across the stations and provide a safe reliable tube system.
RMT, together with the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA), staged a 48-hour subway strike in London in February, leading to major traffic disruptions in the city.
The unions cancelled their second planned 48-hour strike after they reached a deal with London Underground, who stated that "some ticket offices could stay open" following a review of the stations, according to RMT.
